Marlen and Henning are unable to have children. However, an opportunity opens up to adopt a child from Chile. They first meet little Araceli at an orphanage located in the city of Puerto Montt. Initially Araceli seems a bit scared of the visiting strangers but little by little she warms up to Marlen and Henning. Suddenly bad news: Araceli and a large number of the other children are diagnosed with meningitis. The prescribed antibiotics do not work. Marlen is enraged and - an assistant medical technician by trade - wants to find out why the particular strain of bacteria that causes the meningitis is resistant to the antibiotics. She suspects it could be the drinking water or maybe a certain type of food that is served at the orphanage. Initially she investigates on her own but soon the others join in to find out what is going on…
