When Hanna’s husband Karl is called to serve in WWII, she is left with the family and his cabinet-making business. She discovers how much she enjoys working with wood and manages to cope with the double burden of family and job. When Karl returns in 1952, he wants Hanna to resume her role as a housewife, but she is no longer the woman she once was. Hanna feels trapped and patronized, while Karl – broken by the war – retreats into his old patriarchal value system. When the mayor attempts to force the sale of their business to his cousin, Karl and Hanna must learn that one cannot turn back time.
