The movie takes us back to Poland in the year 1946. In a war torn city in the reclaimed Polish territories a polish artist and an American soldier meet and fall in love.
Director Krzysztof Zanussi who had been abroad when martial law was imposed in Poland knew that with the increasing oppression in his home country travel for dissident artists would be severely restricted. Zanussi decided to stay put in Western Europe and seek support for a suitcase full of projects at the doors of film and television production companies. One of the first to support him was Regina Ziegler, who immediately backed him on the 1982 TV movie DIE UNERREICHBARE (THE UNAPPROACHABLE), starring Leslie Caron. Regina Ziegler then continued her support for Zanussi with four more productions over the next decade.
