The Amber Necklace, Parts I and II (2003)

The moving two-part drama “The Amber Necklace” (WT), based on the novel of the same name by Peter Prange, has been filmed for Channel One in a castle near Stendal, in Krumke (Osterburg, Sachsen-Anhalt).

In the year 1994 Barbara and Alexander Reichenbach host a family meeting with their three children in Hagenow Castle, Barbara’s former family home in eastern Germany. The time has come to tell the children their passionate and exciting love story, which began 50 years ago here in this stunning property. Summer 1944: a wedding is being celebrated in Hagenow Castle. Barbara, the beautiful daughter of Baron Albin von Ganski is marrying Alexander Reichenbach, a physicist who has been exempt from serving at the front due to his importance to science. As a token of his love Alexander places an amber necklace around the neck of his bride. However, the young couple are regarded with displeasure by two of the wedding guests: Elisabeth the manageress of the estate, who is the illegitimate daughter of the Baron, is also in love with Alexander, while the SS officer Luschnat pursues the beautiful Barbara with his declarations of love. Intrigue, along with the chaos of the war and the post-war period, places a heavy burden upon the love of this young couple, and only when the Berlin Wall is built in the year 1961 do Barbara and Alexander - with the assistance of a Russian officer - manage to leave everything behind them. However, in order to be able to construct a future for themselves at last, Barbara is obliged to leave behind the amber necklace.
