The electronic versions of the old one-armed bandits are the MONARCH's aim in the appropriate bars, and his only source of income. With a trick only he knows he is able to “crack open” almost every machine in certain spotted out bars. So he drives from town to town in his Mercedes, staying in cheap hotels, showing himself in suit and tie by night and in blue-collar at lunchtime. When he walks into the bars and gets down to business both admired and envied by the less successful, the landlords despise him and chase him away.
