Winnie Heller is the youngest inspector in the Wiesbaden Homicide Division. She is in her late 20s, single, ambitious and dedicated to her profession. She graduated from Police Academy with the highest marks in criminology and psychology. However, there is a note in her file: obstinate and something of a loner.
It is the middle of summer when five-year-old Corinna suddenly vanishes from a playground. Has the girl been kidnapped? Meanwhile, Winnie Heller and her colleague, Inspector Hendrik Verhoeven, are called to a crime scene; the body of 40-year-old Lilli Fennrich has been found in a pond. There are no marks of violence on the corpse, but her husband Jasper Fennrich confesses to her murder. In their first case Winnie Heller and Verhoeven have to unravel a tangled web of dramatic family connections before they finally establish a link between the two crimes.
