Three ladies in the prime of life, none of them under 60, live together in a terraced house in the Berlin suburb of Lankwitz. Many years ago Susanne was the companion of a hairdressing millionaire, Rotraut used to be a chorus girl at the Nollendorf Theatre in the 1930s as well as taking bit parts in films, and Hermine was the housekeeper of famous conductor Dr. Holbein. What brings these three very different personalities together is the fact that none of them has enough money to live alone. What keeps them together is the determination to avoid an old people’s home at all costs. Their practical arrangement has become an exercise in communal living, which in the course of time will also include a gentleman friend. Together they not only get by; they turn the world upside down.
