Leontes, King of Sicily, wrongfully accuses his wife Hermione of committing adultery with his brother Polyxenes. He throws his unhappy queen into jail and abandons the child she has in prison to the wilds. The Delphic oracle confirms Hermine's innocence; his elder son dies from the stress of the whole affair and Hermione almost dies when she hears of her son's death. Only then does Leontes recognise his injustice. But it is too late and he is left no choice than to spend his entire life in mourning. Sixteen years pass. Perdita, Hermione's daughter has grown into a beautiful young woman in the care of a shepherd. Polyxenes forbids their illmatched love and the young lovers flee to the court of King Leontes. Perdita's real identity is revealed and the oracle thus fulfilled, allowing Leontes the chance to escape his misfortune. Now Hermione, who they thought was dead and who has been hiding all the years, can return to her husband's arms.
