Karen Brendel and her husband, protestant pastor Oskar Brendel, live a harmonious and rewarding life. They have made their church work their central obligation. The pastor is respected in the community, and Karen diligently fulfills all the duties of a pastor’s wife. At a town festival their youngest son Matthias celebrates his graduation with a bit too much to drink. He is devastated when he finds Maren, the girl he adores, flirting with another guy. In the ensuing brawl Maren suffers a cut to her forehead. After she has been treated by the local doctor Brunner she leaves the festivities. Later that night the festival goers find out that Maren was found heavily injured and unconscious at the bottom of a look-out tower, Matthias’ cell-phone next to her but Matthias is nowhere to be found. After she is brought to the hospital her condition is diagnosed to be critical and she falls into a coma. Her devastated mother Doris Grote makes no secret that she thinks Matthias is responsible for her daughter’s condition. The police also consider Matthias’ disappearance to be more than suspicious. Matthias’ mother Karin believes in her son’s innocence and does everything she can to find him. When she finally confronts him she has to face a truth so devastating that it not only changes the relationship to her son and her husband forever but forces her to put her whole life back together.
