It always was a matter of believe – some believed the fall of the Berlin Wall would never happen. Others believe it would happen but only in the distant future.
Everything turned out differently than anyone could have expected it. The path to German unification on October 3 1990 was anything but pre-determined. Between the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and the signing of the unification contract only 11 month later anything at almost any point could have gone awry. The fact alone that the opening of the wall at the night of November 9, 1989 took place without bloodshed comes close to be a miracle. Nobody could have foreseen that out of that night a flood of events would take place that could overcome not only all ideological differences but could end the Cold War itself. Nobody could have envisioned that a chain reaction would be triggered which would result in the unification celebrations of October 3, 1990.
