The encounter with a street musician in 19th century Germany leads young Heinrich Bockelmann, grandfather of the country’s greatest contemporary entertainer, Udo Jürgens, to Moscow. Heinrich becomes an influential banker in Russia, but World War I abruptly ends his career. His son Rudi and his family settle in Austria where they experience the Nazis´ terror at first hand. Rudi’s sensitive son Udo would rather play the piano than to excel in the Hitler Youth. Music helps him to deal with the events of the war and, despite all the resistance he encounters, to set out to an unparalleled career.
