Willi And His Comrades
1978
The comment in his school report reads: "Willy Klein is a dreamer. Unlikely to obtain the school leaving certificate". This is how things do turn out, and Willy, without any qualifications, gets involved with a group of young neo-Nazis - so that the final end of his school career is the result rather than cause of his radical development. Willy, the "zero", who gains as little from his surroundings as he gives, has been dreaming of a world of tanks and heroic battles for a long time. Dreaming himself out of the anonymous concrete world of the Berlin Märkisches Viertel, his "home", where only the slogans painted on the walls - dismissed as "smeans" - have any personal, aggressive and colourful resonance. Finding no stability or warmth there, Willy's step into the isolation of a subculture is merely a logical consequence.
