1995, within the turmoil of the Balkan war. For neurosurgeon Victor Novak (Tim Bergmann) and his young German colleague Karen Bender (Katharina Böhm) every operation in the Red-Cross-Camp means giving medical aid by risking their own lives The hospital has been evacuated but they still have to operate a young girl in order to save her life. Unwaveringly they complete the operation during the bombing of the camp. There is no time left for their own escape, therefore they hide in an empty factory building. Overwhelmed by their fear they look for each others closeness so they can feel that they are both still alive. Only later Karen confesses, that she has been shortly before happily married. Viktor falls in love with her but accepts her feelings.

Seven years later: Karen has long returned to Germany and works successfully as a specialist for plastic surgery. Together with her husband, lawyer Christoph (Stefan Kampwirth), and her little daughter Kim (Leslie Vanessa Lill), they enjoy their lives. Everything seems to be perfect. One day doctors discover with Kim an inherited deformity of her blood vessels. An immediate operation becomes necessary. As a guest at the clinic in Munich is Prof. Viktor Novak - a very renowned specialist. This comes as a chock to Karen. Even though she knows, that he would be the best to operate her daughter – the medical codex forbids it. Their encounter seven years ago was not without consequences – but Kim’s life is at risk…
