Mongolia - The Caravans
2005
Two German teams, each with five participants, set off on an adventurous eight-week trip. They travel in caravans along the ancient trade routes used by the Mongolians, accompanied by experienced local caravan-leaders. One of the routes starts in the north, leading through mountainous, forest territory with crystal-clear lakes and lush vegetation, and then crossing the steppes until it reaches Karakorum, the ancient capital of the legendary Mongolian ruler Ghenghis Kahn.

The way is the goal:
This innovative travel documentary, made by Ziegler Film for ZDF, combines adventure, entertainment and knowledge in ways never before attempted. Two camel trains will engage in a trading contest, and as the caravans journey through Mongolia the viewer will experience this unique country in all its variety of geographical features and wildlife.
The caravans will take two different routes, finally converging at Karakorum, Ghenghis Kahn‘s ancient domain, deep in the interior of the country. The northern route will involve yaks and simple wooden carts travelling through the highland forests, past crystal-clear mountain lakes, before emerging to the endless steppes. The southern route, in contrast, starts at the Gobi Desert, that vast, imposing wasteland of sand and rocks, before also leading the camel train across the steppes into the interior of the country.
Both teams will be furnished with goods to trade, and as they make their way along the different routes they will have to sell some of them to provide themselves with an income. Transporting these goods on camels and horses, suffering extremes of heat and cold while covering long distances on foot, making their way through a strange land with curious customs and mysterious traditions – our participants will face physical and social hardships as well as obstacles that can hardly be predicted. Their task is to rise to these challenges.
In a nutshell: “Mongolia – The Caravans” is a journey to give you itchy feet.
