Momella - A Farm in Africa

2006

A ZDF docudrama about a German woman and her dream of a farm in Africa
“Complete Woman” Christine Neubauer plays Margarete Trappe, who set off with her husband exactly 100 years ago, at the age of 23, on the long trip from Germany to East Africa. Over two episodes this docudrama depicts the fascinating life story of a woman who succeeded in building up the farm of Momella at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro - a dream which she had to fight for again and again over a period of 50 years during the years of war and crisis in the 20th century. Filming will continue at the end of October in Tanzania.

This German "Out of Africa" begins in the year 1907. Margarete Trappe brought up four children on Momella; she was a legendary hunter, someone revered by blacks and whites alike as a miracle healer. Articles, photographs and film material from eyewitnesses, family members and friends of the Trappes, along with footage of her old house, her grave and her legacy - a school at Meru - are interwoven with scenic re-enactments which bring to life the story of this impressive woman and the incredible tale of her farm, Momella.
