Beyond the Wall

2008 - Germany

September 1974. At the Bösebrücke border crossing between East and West Germany Heike (Katja Flint) and Ulrich Molitor (Edgar Selge), along with their two little children Klaus and Miriam, are caught trying to escape to the West. As a punishment the parents are presented with a terrible decision: they will be permitted to leave for West Germany with their seven-year-old son, but their two-year-old daughter Miriam must remain in East Germany and will be given up for adoption. If the Molitors refuse these conditions, they will both be imprisoned for a year - and then their son Klaus will also be taken from them. This situation forms the basis for an emotional story in which various destinies in East and West intertwine, reaching a dramatic climax with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Molitors have no choice but to leave Miriam in East Germany, and very soon a couple called Pramann (Ulrike Krumbiegel and Herbert Knaup) become devoted to the little girl and adopt her. 15 years later the West German teenager Nils (Moritz Grove), who is spending some time in East Germany visiting relatives, falls in love with the 17-year-old and extremely attractive Rebecca (Henriette Confurius). Rebecca herself has no idea that she is actually Miriam Molitor, who was adopted by the Pramanns. Meanwhile Brigitte Schröder (Renate Krößner), former head of a children's home and wife of a hardline communist functionary (Veit Stübner), has been writing fake letters to the Molitors, claiming to be their long-lost daughter. At the same time we meet a couple called Michaelis who have been denounced by Pramann (Herbert Knaup), an East German secret service officer, and who therefore face extreme hardship. But now the East German regime crumbles, the Berlin Wall falls, and on the night of the 10th of November 1989 the fate of all the protagonists becomes entwined when masses of East Germans sweep through the Bösebrücke border crossing.
