Fleeting Acquaintis

1982

Dieter Wellershoff: The film "FLEETING ACQUAINTANCES" tells a story of everyday life: a weekend in the life of a divorced woman, who sometimes goes out with women friends, and makes the acquaintance of men. She has the disillusion of the divorce behind her and tries to make the best of things, to resist the temptation to give up. She has a career of her own and therefore has had to leave her child with he parents, and the resulting feelings of guilt make her impatient, insecure and touchy. She is looking for some interpersonal warmth, new contacts, but keeps on getting involved in fleeting, interchangeable acquaintanceseships where sexuality has adopted a perverse role as a means of keeping away more intense human contact. Her partners are men who are just passing through, who turn up and then vanish when they feel like it.

Searching and escaping: these are the ever-returning internal movements in the story. Avoidance of the danger of fresh disappointments, of suffering and tragedy, although perhaps happiness can only be attained by taking these risks. And endless repetitions of the searching game, a way of encountering life with reduced expectations, while oscillating between disillusionment and dreams which cannot be renounced. It isn't easy to find a way to yourself with such games, without being destroyed.
