The Spreepirates II&III
1990

The first nine episodes of this series have been filmed in Berlin. The city was chosen as a location for a "pirate's" tale, because it posesses a large network of lakes, rivers and canals, integrated into the urban landscape. In fact, it is often said that Berlin has more bridges than Venice. And like Venetian bridges, Berlin's waterways present an ideal setting for a child's phantasies. It is no wondr then, that the figure of the pirate is one of the favourite characters in children's games. This pirate, hidden in each Berlin youngster, is just waiting to ermerge for its next urban adventure - much to the despair of the adults looking on...
The series revolves around four of these city pirates: identical twins Marie and Louise Kukowski (thirteen years old), their brother Matt (eleven years old) and sister Babette (eight years old). All four of are expert in making trouble.
OUr four city pirates roam Berlin's streets and canals, profiting from the kindness of an expert: grandfather Otto, a retired boatman who has spent his lifetime navigating the waterways aboard his barge "Marianne 2". Retirement has not diminished his passion for navigation, and he and his wife Anna have chosen to make the "Marianne 2" their permanent home. The boat is firmly moored to the canal's bank in the heart of the city, not far from the Kukowski's apartment. the barge is the center of our four pirate's activities - an interesting setting for many unusual and amusing adventures.
