The Great Lie

2008

Sophie (Christine Neubauer) is a sculptor and lives in Munich, happily married to Gabriel (Georg Ebinal). He is worshipped by their daughter Anne (Leonie Kienzle), though as a hotel manager he spends a lot of time on Mallorca. Just as well that Sophie's mother Christa (Angelika Bender) always has plenty of time for her granddaughter. And then one day the family gets terrible news: Gabriel has been killed in a car crash.
Deeply shaken, Sophie flies to Mallorca where she is required to identify the body. And now it emerges that her husband was not alone in the car at the time. A woman Sophie has never seen before, Maren (Dani Stein), was in the passenger seat. And now Sophie meets Michael (Bernhard Bettermann), the attractive husband of the dead woman, who is just as baffled in his grief as she is.
Back in Munich Sophie discovers a photograph showing Gabriel and Maren looking happy together - and a key. The terrible suspicion that her husband might have been having an affair begins to grow. On the spur of the moment she gets a plane back to Mallorca. At the scene of the accident she encounters Michael, who has found an identical key. Torn between their desire to know the truth and fear of being hurt, Sophie and Michael proceed to uncover the double lives that their partners were leading. Just as they feel consumed by despair they begin to come close - and fall in love. But for Sophie the happiness of her family is more important than her own. So she is quite prepared to risk our love for Michael…
