A moving drama about a woman whose life is in ruins and who rebuilds it - only to find herself facing an impossible decision.
Anna has just taken her daughter Natalie (Maria Burghardt) to the railway station; she is going abroad on a school exchange program for a year. It is now that Rolf tells his wife he wants to start a new life with a younger woman, a colleague of his at work, and he wants a divorce. Anna is naturally deeply hurt; all of a sudden her life has collapsed around her. Dazed, she packs her bag and seeks refuge with her father, Hannes Schulz (Charles Brauer), in the idyllic village where she grew up. It is here that she meets up again with the man she loved as a teenager, Nick Grasshoff (Michael von Au). Nick has become a policeman and lives in a beautiful house by the lake with his little daughter Isabelle (Luisa Neuhäuser). Six months ago his wife, who was suffering from severe depression, killed herself. Since her mother's death Isabelle has been deeply traumatized and refuses to speak a word.
Anna devotes herself tenderly to caring for Isabelle. Gradually the girl comes to trust her and even begins to speak once more. Before long Anna and Nick rediscover the old intimacy between them.
Rolf has meanwhile come to realize that his affair was a complete mistake. He now begs Anna to come back to him. She doesn't know what to do: she does love Nick, but at 20 years of marriage have left her feeling very strong ties to Rolf. At this point she realizes that she is again pregnant - and Rolf is the father. Anna decides she should rebuild her old life at Rolf's side, also for the sake of the children. However, the last few months have made a deep impression upon her. And before long Anna comes to see that she has no alternative: she must follow the dictates of her heart…
