Joy of her life

2002

Maria Bergmann (Thekla Carola Wied) owns a flower shop in a first-class Berlin hotel. Her son Niklas (Oliver Bootz), her pride and joy, is about to take his final exams in his studies as concert pianist. Her loyal friend Barbara (Franziska Troegner) supports Maria in word and deed. One day, Holger Schenk (Walter Kreye) enters her flower shop and buys a bunch of flowers for the grave of his son Paul, who was killed in a car accident two years ago. The hit-and-run driver was never found. From the first moment on, Maria and Holger feel very close and confide in one another. Maria helps him get over his painful memories, so much so that he draws from her new courage to face life. Also, Niklas and his girlfriend Melanie (Katja Woywood) appeal to him. One day, when the lost statement of a witness to the accident turns up, Maria begins to suspect that Niklas was the driver of the car that hit the boy. Niklas is ablt to calm Maria down, until she finds out that he was lying to her. She has a nervous breakdown and leaves on the spot for the Baltic Sea. The unsuspecting Holger follows her, and she tells him the incomprehensible truth. A farewell letter from Niklas sends Maria rushing back to Berlin. Holger remains behind. In Berlin Maria discovers that Niklas has tried to commit sucide – exactly on the spot where he had hit Holger’s son with the car. At the scene of the accident she unexpectedly meets Holger…
