I Thought I Was Dead

A 17 years old girl who feels she is not equal to the requirements imposed by her parents, her boss and her friends, takes an overdose of sleeping pills. She is saved and gradually realizes that discussions lead to real living and not "escape". She finds a solution acceptable to herself and she learns how to laugh again. She learns to regain her self-assurance and develops considerable capability of an understanding - as a conflict-ill-advised interference of her parents in her effort to achieve self-confidence and of finding the right answer. Her parents have to accept that. The way is paved for a more honest and more open relationship between her and her surroundings.

Summer Folk

The Symphony turns to be a "cacophony" consisting of faces, gestures and conversation, full of dissonance and hope, grief and tenderness, destruction and fundamental change when "Datschniki", summer guests, meet on a "Datscha" in the Summer of 1904 (Gorki). The impulse for leaving the society in which active social engagement cannot be realized is given by a widow-doctor, she is joined by a wife - suffering from her unfullfilled life of being childless - of an unsrupolous lawyer. A former wealthy factory manager, the brother of the woman and the unmarried sister of the lawyer, who has fled into a world of painting and piano, follow. The women from the other two unhappy marriages stay with their husbands.

Kamikaze 1989

Over the past quarter-century Regina Ziegler has collaborated with Wolf Gremm on 5 productions, half of which were cinema-related. His "I Thought I Was Dead" (1973), their mutual debut as producer and director, sketched the painful everyday of a adapted from a seminal Erich Kästner novel and nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category, effectively probed the social and political climate of the 1930s in Germany. But it was Wolf Gremm's close relationship with Rainer Werner Fassbinder that resulted in one of the cult film in the New German Cinema movement: "Kamikaze" 1989 (198 ), starring Rainer and directed by Wolf. A skillfully constructed personal film, "Kamikaze" 1989 is based on Swedish writer Per Wahlö's thriller and stars Fassbinder as a police detective in his last acting role...

A Year of the Quiet Sun

It was two years after the imposition of martial law in Poland. Krzysztof Zanussi, who had been abroad when the curtain fell and knew that travel for dissident artists would be severely restricted, decided to stay put in western Europe and seek support for a suitcase of projects at the doors of film and television production companies. One of the first to support him was Regina Ziegler, who immediately backed him on "Die Unerreichbare" (The Unapproachable) (1982 ), starring Leslie Caron, and then followed with four more productions over the next decade to help tide him over... 

Korczak

Andrzej Wajda's Korczak (1990) paid tribute to a man who spent most of his life in pursuit of an ideal. Although a recognized doctor of medicine and a committed pedagogue who in 1911 had founded an orphanage for Jewish children, it was through his writings that he became internationally known. Set in 1944 , three years after the German invasion of Poland, the film covers the last tragic chapter of his life at the Jewish orphanage located just outside the confines of the Warsaw Ghetto. Henryk Goldszmit, better known as Dr. Janusz Korczak (1878-1942), was already well known in intellectual circles when, in 1972 , he was posthumously awarded in Frankfurt the Peace Prize of the German Book Publishers...

Solo for Clarinet

Berlin. In an desolate tenement block the police discovers the gruesomely severed body of a man. Apparently a piece of his genitals has been bitten off. Head Detective Bernie Kominka's investigations lead him to a young woman in a red coat, and from there straight into the turbulent labyrinth of his feelings. He falls in love with his main suspect and loses control of his senses, not knowing whether or not the woman he is attracted to is a brutal murderer...
